First Draft of Magazine Advert

This is a mock of my idea for my magazine advert, I think it still needs some work before I can say its finished.

Wednesday 17 December 2014

Record Label Logo

I've also made a logo for the record label which I can use for my ancillary tasks:

Magazine Advert Ideas

There were some initial designs I drew, planning my first few ideas:

I decided I quite liked the first idea I drew so I've taken a mock photo showing what it would look like if I do it properly.

I now need to decide if I want to carry on and use this design and in which ways (if any) I want to change/adapt it.

Storyboard

This is the first story board I have come up with, its unlikely I will stick to it exactly but it has given me a rough idea of what I want to do and has helped me to order my ideas.

Starting the Storyboard

I am starting the storyboard, however, I am struggling to sort out an order and what to include throughout the video, I need to think of more details of what to include. I know how I'd like the video to start and end, I just to figure out what to do during the rest of the video and if I am going to link what happens to the lyrics or not.

Music Video Ideas

This week I have been trying to put together a storyboard and even though I have a few ideas of what I want to do I am struggling to come up with a narrative or an order for my ideas.
These are the ideas I have for my music video:
  • I could use a montage of videos of the old relationship referred to in the lyrics that the artist says he misses. Include old photos?
  • Have the artist at the front of the shot playing the song on guitar, with events playing behind him going fast, showing the passing of time. This would probably be very challenging to edit but I think it would look good.
  • Have the artist performing in a natural setting.
  • Do a performance video, just the artist playing in a studio setting for example. However this idea isn't what would appeal most to my audience after analysing my audience research.
  • Flashbacks between the old relationship and the girls new relationship.
  • Quite a wintery theme to the music video, refers to rain in the lyrics.

I need to choose one to base my music video around once I have a main idea I can adapt it to suit what I do better but I need an initially idea to work with.  I really like the second idea so I'm going to try and use that or adapt it to something similar.

Analysis of my Songs Lyrics

Song Lyrics:                                                                      Analysis:
Did you practise those faces in the mirror                           She's fake, acts differently to the way
Lying to yourself when you called me dear                        she used to.
Your not the same as yesterday
Won't you please come out to play

Lighting candles in the dark,                                              Light could be hope but there is non
means nothing its got no spark without you                       without her.

Over and over and over again,                                           She constantly reinforces that she
call me a friend                                                                   doesn't really love him, its all pretend.
Over and over and over again,
we just pretend

Well I don't want this anymore                                          He just wants to fix things, go back to
I just want my everything                                                   before.

Always and always and always,                                        He can't ever stop loving her. He doesn't
I love you                                                                           want to.
Always and always and always,
I'll hold you till the end

Don't call me sweetheart anymore                                     Contradicting-conflicting feelings.
I miss your head around the door
Never knew just what you meant
There are letters I never sent

Polaroids in the rain                                                          He can't have fun without her.
No fun, their not the same without you

I saw you on the streets the other day
He was holding your hand that special way                     She's moved on and he hasn't. Jealous.
The way I used to years ago
I don't know why you can't let him go

Standing in the rain,                                                         Watching her now she's moved on was
I knew life would never be the same                               hard realisation that he won't get her back
Standing in the rain,                                                         now.
I knew life would never be the same
Standing in the rain,
I knew life would never be the same

Life will never be the same                                             He will struggle to get over her.
My life will never be the same
My life will never be the same without you

Over and over and over again,
call me a friend
Over and over and over again,
we just pretend

Well I don't want this anymore
I just want my everything

Always and always and always,
I love you
Always and always and always,
I'll hold you till the end.

Ideas:
I would like to represent the song lyrics in my music video by using a narrative with elements of performance. I would like the guitar being played in the video as this song would fit into the singer/songwriter genre so some focus on instruments would help the music video fit into the genre. For the narrative part of the video I think having two people to act out a relationship would work best. I quite like the idea of doing a montage of videos of an old relationship similar to the way this music video does it.

My music video is going to have an independent style as the song I am using doesn't suit big mainstream/commercial videos like those used in the pop genre. The music video could either portray a sad tone to represent the sad lyrics or it could be made a bit more cheerful by looking back on the relationship however, this would still probably have a sad undertone because he wants to go back to the way it was. I don't think I will make the editing very fast paced because it wouldn't suit the song which is quite slow.

What Have I Learned From Research?

From the codes and conventions I learned about, I would like to include:
Having a mixture (both performance and narrative included) as my music video.
I will use close ups as they are common generic camera angles used in music videos.
The majority of conventions I looked at were to do with performance videos which isn't really what I want to include in my music video.
I'm not sure yet whether I want to do a linear or fragmented narrative style, I think a fragmented style would suit the song I am using more.

From the research into the singer/songwriter genre I have learned:
Their main concern is to place more emphasis on the song rather than the performance of it. Therefore, I will represent the lyrics in my music video by based the narrative around them and by including some elements of performance so there is a focus on the singing and instruments.

From my audience research questionnaire:
Overall, their prefered genres of music were pop and singer/songwriter which is good because my song fits into the singer/songwriter genre. The majority of people prefered music videos containing both narrative and performance so this is what I am going to include in my video to appeal to my audience.

From music video analysis:
In the majority of music videos I looked at there wasn't really any diegetic sound, it just went straight into the music playing.
The editing and cuts tend to match the pace of the music so I will use slower cuts to match the song I am using.
The artists tend to get the most camera attention but I'm not sure yet if I'm going to include the artist in the narrative parts of the video.
Generally the mise en scene can be related to the lyrics in some way which is what I want to include in my music video.

Research Into The Genre Of The Song I Am Using

The genre of the song I am going to use is singer/songwriter. This means that the artist writes and performs their own music generally accompanied by playing the guitar or piano. Their main concern is to place more emphasis on the song rather than the performance of it. Their songs are also used for political purpose as they focus more on what is being said in the song lyrics. Examples of singer/songwriter artists are Bob Dylan whos song "Blowin' in the Wind" which questioned social and political affairs at the time it was written (1961).
"Yes, how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry ?
Yes, how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died ? "

It has been described as a protest song as it uses lot of rhetorical questions about peace, war and freedom.

Another example of an artist from this genre would be Gabrielle Aplin who's songs are more romance based but the lyrics still have meaning behind them. She puts more focus on the song and plays her own instruments to create the song which puts her into the singer/songwriter genre even if her songs don't have a more powerful/political meaning for example.

The song I am using is more like those of Gabrielle Aplin as the lyrics are more romance based therefore it will fit into this part of the market in the singer/songwriter genre.

What I Have Found From Audience Research

From the questionnaires I asked my audience to fill out this is the sumary of the results I collected:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1heJKB0lSaNwytgZ-AcDDJNUbi9wM_P3AI5OAQE4rWh8/viewanalytics

The majority of people I asked were female though there was a only a small gap between both genders, aged between 16-30, white ethnicity with no religion and were students. This will be my main target audience for my music video.

Overall, their prefered genres of music were pop and singer/songwriter. They mainly watch videos on the internet and they watch music videos more often than not. The majority of people prefered music videos containing narrative and performance with mainly the apperance and images used on adverts and digipaks that influence them to buy music. I will have to consider this when I am making my product.

Age Ratings on Music Videos

In the media recently it has been discussed whether there should be age ratings on music videos, like there are on films, as people are becoming considerably more concerned about the extent of sexual content in music videos that children have access to. Companies such as YouTube say they are committed to the idea but technical change may take time and Vevo have agreed to trial the scheme. Three of the biggest labels in the UK - Sony, Universal and Warner Brothers - have all also agreed to take part but it will only apply to artists signed to UK labels. The BBFC will be deciding what age ratings to give the videos like they do for films. David Cameron is piloting the scene and has said he wants "to help parents protect their children from some of the graphic content in online music videos".

Vevo have said "While Vevo is a supporter of artist expression and free speech, we do believe it is important to inform parents and viewers about any music video programming we distribute that may not be suitable for all viewers."

Analysing The 1975

Robbers by the 1975 is in the Indie Rock genre.

Lyrics: http://www.metrolyrics.com/robbers-lyrics-the-1975.html

The lyrics of this song are referring to a relationship. The mask referred to in the lyrics "But if you just take off your mask, To find out that everything's gone wrong" suggests that they aren't showing their true selves and they could feel safer with the mask on. The death "And he's got his gun, he's got his suit on, She says, "Babe, you look so cold" suggests that the relationship being talked about is falling apart and the "robbers" are an extended metaphor throughout.

The camera angles used are mainly close ups and two shots. The two shots show the two people constantly kissing and touching which indexically shows that they are in a relationship which links to the lyrics talking about being in a relationship. The close up further reinforces the relationship between the two people.

The mise en scene is important as it makes it clear what the genre of the music video is such as the costumes worn which are tight jeans, open shirts and the style of hair cuts. There is also smoking, sex and guitar shown in the video which adds to the sense of this being a part rock video as these are the kinds of things that are related to rock artists. The location of the music video is very run down and could be described as "off the beaten track" which means its not mainstream like pop videos for example as its not being filmed in a recognisable/iconic location which can also be linked back to the indie genre.

The song used in the video is just the music tack playing up until the robbery scene when the score stops and the diegetic sounds of the gunshots and shouting can be heard possible to emphasise the chaos and destruction of the relationship.

The video is arguably a hybrid as it is mainly narrative however, there are small elements of performance towards the beginning of the video. They also cut between events in the video which make more sense at the end. This use of anti-narrative reflects the volatile/destructive nature of the relationship being talked about in the lyrics.

Similar to the 1975's music video is Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood.

They are an american rock band so their genre is similar to The 1975 and this is clear in their video.

"Cause it's too cold
For you here"    There is a reference to the cold in their lyrics similar to Robbers however, instead of the realtionship being discussed falling apart its about how "cold" they feel when their apart compared to when they are together:
"These hearts adore
Everyone the other beats hardest for
Inside this place is warm".

There are more varied camera angles in this video and there is no relationship being presented in the video, instead they are more focused on showing the band and the logo is focused on a lot, so its a lot about self promotion.

The mise en scene is quite similar to the one shown in Robbers. Smoking is shown in the video which links into the rock genre which is a similar theme shown in Robbers. The video is in black and white which

Progress Link Post

Initially I thought I was just making a music video but after this lesson I have realised I am making more than that. The music video is going to be selling something to the audience, its not just selling the song but also what people want or what they aspire to. For example a song that is based on love will have lyrics that will people will be able to relate or want to be able to relate to when it comes to love. The song will also have a music video with it showing a perfect relationship where the couple are happy and everything is working out. This will appeal to people because they would aspire to be in a relationship like that so the music video will be selling them the ideals that they would want in their relationships.

This song and video are a good example of the perfect relationship and love working out. The audience watching this will want to feel like this at some point in their lives and for love to work out for them. It meets certain people's aspirations and dreams.

From learning this I now need to apply the theory that the music video will mean a lot more to my audience than just listening to a song and watching a music video and it should meet something they want in order for it to appeal to them and stand out for them as something memorable. I need to ensure I keep this in mind when making my product.

Iconic Music Video Directors

Directors such as David Fincher have directed music videos as well as films. A few examples of music videos he has directed are Vogue by Madonna and Janie's got a gun by Areosmith along with poplar films Seven, Fight Club and The Social Network. He started off doing pop music videos (madonna) before he got into film. When he filmed Janie's got a Gun in 1994 he made it a mini-movie staged like a thriller and from this he went on to film Seven a year later. He has now had 2 academy award nominations both for best director. He has also won two grammy awards for best music video and 3 MTV awards for best direction.

Spike Jonze is mainly known for his direction of music videos however he has also directed a few films as well. He directed Buddy Holly for Weezer back in 1994 where he puts them in the sitcom Happy Days performing the song. His best video being Sabotage by the Beastie boys which won 4 MTV music video awards with Jonze winning best director. Sabotage uses a montage of typical 'cop' clips making it fast paced and entertaining which makes it compatible with the song.

Francis Lawrence has had a successful career filming music videos, working for people such as Beyonce, Green Day, Avril Lavigne and Lady Gaga. Lawrence was know for his original and imaginative music video scripts and visual directing style. From music videos he has gone on to direct films such as I am Legend and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Reseach on Digipak Adverts

The pictures used on the advert will follow the design or be the design of the digipak cover. The largest text on the advert will be the artists name to make it clear who is being promoted. There is commonly an 'includes' list letting people know which of the artists popular songs will be on the album. The date of the album release will also be clear.

This advert for Marina & the diamonds follows all the typical conventions for an album release advert. The artists name is clearest with the picture being of her and central so she has all of the attention, the is nothing else in the image to distract the audience attention. The is an includes list at the bottom listing her most popular songs that will be on the album. This advert also promotes her single "Shampain" by showing the single cover.

This advert for Coldplays album Myloxyloto also follows the typical conventions of the adverts as the picture is the same as on the album cover, which all follow the same theme. The name of the album is the main text on the advert and it is central, this is what they want to sell to the audience the most. The release date and band name is also on the advert but they aren't as prominent, there is further text on the bottom of the advert giving further information on pre-sales and singles already for sale. The atypical things about this advert is the lack of an 'includes' list, this could suggest they are so much of a popular band that people would know there songs already, they don't need to be reminded.

This advert for Rihanna's album loud would probably be designed to be a double page spread in a magazine or a billboard advert. This is a typical algum release advert. Photos of the artist are key in the advert meaning it is clear who's music is being advertised, this is supported by the artists name in large print on the top of the advert. A photo of the album is also included on the advert so the audience know what to look out for when they are buying music. The release date is clear at the bottom of the advert. Minimal amounts of text are used so the audience only get the information they need and aren't distracted by anything else.

Looking into the Digipak

A digipak is the packaging a cd comes in.

They are made out of card stock of another type of heavy paper or cardboard material and the part which holds the disk is usually a plastic case which is glued onto the paper background. The most common CD Digipaks is the 4 panel Digipak which opens like a book. However 6 panel CD Dipipaks are also very popular as they provide a larger canvas for CD artwork and text information about the CD.
These are examples templates for a 4 and 6 panel digipak:

The front and back panels are used to promote the cd and draw the audience in and the inside panels are used to give more information such as song lyrics, artist information and any personal messages. On the back of the pack will usually be the track list.

History of Music Videos

A very early example of a music video was in 1929 where singer Bessie Smith appeared in a short film Saint Louis Blue's which included a dramatised performance of the song, another early example being in 1940 Walt Disney released Fantasia which was an animated film based around a classical piece of music.

In 1959 J.P 'The Big Bopper' Richardson was the first person to use the phrase "music video"in an interview with a music magazine.

In the 1964 The Beatles created a music video for A Hard Day's Night directed by Richard Lester. This film arguably set out the basic visuals of todays music videos.

In the 1970s Top of the Pops was important to promote the musicians music. The show had strict limits on the number of videos they showed meaning a good video would increase a songs sale as viewers wanted to see the video again next week.

In 1981 MTV was launched with the first video aired being Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles. Some see MTV as a good thing as it successful and as a new artform in popular culture however, some see it in a bad way as the success of a music video can depend on the appearances of the people featured in them. In 1984 Michael Jackson took the narrative music video to a new level through Thriller by using a short film to promote his music.

In 2009 Vevo was founded, it shows music videos across the web with videos from two of the "big three" major record labels, UMG and SME. People can view the music videos shown by Vevo across sites such as Youtube. The launch of Youtube in 2005 allowed amateur and professional artists to release their music online to a wide audience. Youtube is now dominated by music videos and is the No. 1 platform for watching music videos.

Lyrics:                                                                                     Analysis:
Well somebody told me
That I would be a dreamer for life
Somebody told me I would never reach the other side    (he was told he would never achieve
Well you say I'm old news, but cross your fingers            his dreams)
I’m yours to lose.
What if I told you, that things will never improve

And if I lived a lie                                                  (if he was living a lie would someone
Would someone meet me on the other side                 help him realise so he can fix it)
So I can burn up bright,
(so I can burn, so I can burn)

The grass is always greener,
Someone else's past is always cleaner,
But I'm a believer, that there's a fool in all of us        (nobodies perfect)

And if I lived a lie
Would someone meet me on the other side
So I can burn up bright

Oh, I don't really know where our ghosts go            (no one knows whats going to happen
No, I don't really know where Our ghosts go             can't predict anyones future)
So live a lie just tonight, tonight

We are believers, we are believers [7x]                 (in themselves)
We are, we are.

If I lived a lie
Would someone meet me on the other side
So I can burn up bright

And if I lived a lie
Would someone meet me on the other side
So I can burn up bright

Oh, I don't really know where our ghosts go
No, I don't really know where our ghosts go,
So live a lie just tonight, tonight
And burn up bright.

Music Video Analysis (9)

Bastille - Pompeii

Camera:
-zooms from and extreme long shot to a mid shot of the back of the band member looking out onto the city, he looks vulnerable and small
-long shot to establish the setting, appears quite baron

-close up on his now black eyes, he couldn't escape

Mise en Scene:
-city
-main character in the narrative is wearing all black contrasting all other people he meets who are in ordinary clothes however they have black eyes, suggests they are linked somehow, he has the same fate

Editing:
-band name and song title written in bold white to establish the start of the song
-shakey and quite fast paced when he is running away

Sound:
-diegetic sound at the beginning of wind, setting the scene

Lyrics:                                                                             Analysis:
Eh-eh-o eh-o

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show           (has been doing nothing productive)

And the walls kept tumbling down                     (city could be a metaphor for their love)
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills                          (relationship is starting to fall apart)
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,                              (They can remember how good things used
Does it almost feel like                                     to be, maybe trying to persuade her they
Nothing changed at all?                                     can work through the harder times)
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices    (they were arguing)
In your pose as the dust settled around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

Eh-eh-o eh-o

Oh where do we begin?                                 (where do they begin to start to fix things?)
The rubble or our sins?
Oh oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

And the walls kept tumbling down (oh where do we begin?)
In the city that we love (the rubble or our sins?)
Great clouds roll over the hills (oh where do we begin?)
Bringing darkness from above (the rubble or our sins?)

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

If you close your eyes, does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?

Eh-eh-o eh-o

Lyrics:                                                            Analysis:
My face above the water
My feet can't touch the ground,
Touch the ground, and it feels like
I can see the sands on the horizon          (he feels free without her)
Every time you are not around

[Chorus:]
I'm slowly drifting away (drifting away)      (leaving her)
Wave after wave, wave after wave
I'm slowly drifting (drifting away)
And it feels like I'm drowning                   (he feels bad leaving her, she keeps pulling him
Pulling against the stream                         back)
Pulling against the stream

I wish I could make it easy                       (he thinks she finds it hard to love him, his
Easy to love me, love me                           reason to want to leave)
But still I reach
To find a way
I'm stuck here in between                        (stuck between leaving and staying)
I'm looking for the right words to say

[Chorus:]
I'm slowly drifting away (drifting away)
Wave after wave, wave after wave
I'm slowly drifting (drifting away)
And it feels like I'm drowning
Pulling against the stream
Pulling against the stream

Lyrics:                                                                               Analysis:
You are the wind in my sail                                 (love- she almost needs the partner
You are the spring in my step                               vital to her)
You make me laugh you make me cry
And you make me forget

So tell me when you run, I want to run with you   (wants to be with him, will go with him
Tell me where you hide, I want to come to you       anywhere)
Tell me where you go, I want to go there too
Even if you fall I will go down with you
I will be the one who comes to rescue you
Tell me where you go cause I want to be there too

I hid my secrets in a box
I did exactly what you said
Now I’m feeling so much better
Cause you make me forget                                  (forget pian, troubles, he is her comfort)

So tell me when you run, I want to run with you
Tell me where you hide, I want to come to you
Tell me where you go, I want to go there too
Even if you fall I will go down with you
I will be the one who comes to rescue you
Tell me where you go cause I want to be there too
With you, with you, with you, with you

You set the world on fire
but the flames are getting higher
So I stand beneath the waterfall
Yeah you set the world on fire                            (Even if he does something wrong she will
and the flames are getting brighter                       look past it)
but I don’t feel the heat at all

So tell me when you run, I want to run with you
Tell me where you hide, I want to come to you
Tell me where you go, I want to go there too
Even if you fall I will go down with you
I will be the one who comes to rescue you
Tell me where you go cause I want to be there too
With you, with you, with you, with you

Lyrics:                                                                                          Analysis:
Heeey heeeey heeeeey

Your lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left side brains
I knew I wouldn't forget you                                             (a girl he can't forget)
And so I went and let you blow my mind
Your sweet moonbeam
The smell of you in every single dream I dream                 (she's always on his mind)
I knew when we collided you're the one I have decided
Who's one of my kind

Hey soul sister, ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo      (They belong together)
The way you move ain't fair you know
Hey soul sister, I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight

Heeey heeeey heeeey

Just in time, I'm so glad you have a one track mind like me
You gave my life direction
A game show love connection, we can't deny I I-I-I-I
I'm so obsessed
My heart is bound to beat right out my untrimmed chest       (has intense feelings for her)
I believe in you, like a virgin, you're Madonna
And I'm always gonna wanna blow your mind

Hey soul sister, ain't that Mister Mister on the radio, stereo
The way you move ain't fair you know                                 (he finds her attractive)
Hey soul sister, I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight

The way you can't cut a rug
Watching you's the only drug I need
So gangster, I'm so thug
You're the only one I'm dreaming of
You see I can be myself now finally                                  (he's comfortable around her,
In fact there's nothing I can't be                                         loves her)
I want the world to see you'll be with me

Hey soul sister, ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo
The way you move ain't fair you know
Hey soul sister, I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight
Hey soul sister, I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight
Heeey heeeey heeeeey (tonight)
Heeey heeeey heeeeey (tonight)
