First Music Video Analysed

Gives You Hell - All American Rejects

A mixture video (performance and narrative) the video is mainly narrative but they include the band performing as part of the narrative. The narrative represents the lyrics of the song.

Camera:
-establishing shot used for the setting
-pan between settings at the start to understand the narrative, shows difference
-pull focus
-close ups on main singer
-close ups show reactions
-high angle
-long shots + shot reverse shots of confrontation scene
-regular jump cuts, gives the video a faster pace and adds emphasis to the differences being represented

Editing:
-shot reverse shots between 2 main characters showing the difference between them
-fade to black at the end = finality

Mise en scene:
-2 very different people/personalities shown through clothes and houses and behaviour

Sound:
-music doesn't start straight away, uses diegetc sound of crickets and fish tank to set the scene
-people shouting through megaphones when chanting is in the song
-chourus is normally during a scene including both main characters to fit with lyrics

Lyrics:                                                        Analysis:
   I wake up every evening
With a big smile on my face               (He's happy now the relationship is over)
And it never feels out of place
And you're still probably working
At a nine to five pace
I wonder how bad that tastes

When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell                      (Maybe she did something wrong and he wants her to
Hope it gives you hell                        feel bad every time she sees him)
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell

Now where's your picket fence love
And where's that shiny car               (Quite sarcastic, making her feel bad, talking directly to
And did it ever get you far                 her)
You never seemed so tense love
I've never seen you fall so hard
Do you know where you are

And truth be told I miss you             (Sarcasm)
And truth be told I'm lying

When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
If you find a man that's worth a damn and treats you well
Then he's a fool you're just as well
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell

Tomorrow you'll be thinking to yourself
Where'd it all go wrong?
But the list goes on and on

And truth be told I miss you
And truth be told I'm lying

When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you find a man that's worth a damn and treats you well
Then he's a fool, you're just as well                                         (anyone else with her is a
Hope it gives you hell                                                             "fool" = bitter)

Now you'll never see
What you've done to me
You can take back your memories              (Making the break up final, moving on from her)
They're no good to me
And here's all your lies
You can't look me in the eyes
With the sad, sad look
That you wear so well

When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you find a man that's worth a damn and treats you well
Then he's a fool you're just as well
Hope it gives you hell

When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you hear this song and you sing along but you never tell
Then you're the fool, I'm just as well
Hope it gives you hell

When you hear this song
I hope that it will give you hell

You can sing along
I hope that it puts you through hell

Codes and Conventions of Music Videos

There are 5 different types of music video:
-Performance (where the band or artist perform in the video)
-Narrative (there is a story in the music video)
-Mixture (both performance and narrative included)
-Cameo (the band or artist feature in the narrative but don't perform)
-Animation (digital, flash, stop frame)

Close ups are common generic camera angles used in music videos. Whip pans are common in music videos where the artists are performing to keep up with their movements. Crane shots are common in performance videos so as to capture everything that is going on, on stage.

Editing and sound are an important part of the musc video process especially to help with lip synching, Jump cuts are common along with diegectic sound to help explain the narrative.

Props are important as if the music video is performance guitars and stages etc would be needed in order for it to look effective, also costume and location are important as they help to set the scene for the video especially if it is narrative based.

There are 2 types of narrative music video: linear and fragmented. A linear goes from the beginning, to middle to the end of a story  whereas fragmented doesn't. It can jump around the different parts of the narrative.

Briefs

I chose the following brief:

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, no longer than five minutes duration, together with:

  • A cover for its release as part of a digipack (CD/DVD package)
  • A magazine advertisement for the digipack (CD/DVD package)

I chose to do this brief because I thought it would be something I would be most interested in and I thought I would enjoy creating everything that's needed. I enjoyed making magazine adverts in media GCSE so I will hopefully enjoy making that. I already have ideas for what music I can use so I already have a good start with this brief.
